The Village Bugema Lukyamu

Bugema Lukyamu is the name of the village located to the south east of Luwero Town in central Uganda.
The well serves according to figures in 2008, 30 households, 360 people and very important, 1 primary school. Children no longer spend all day walking miles to return in the evening with buckets of water.
Lizzy hopes to visit the Bugema Lukyamu village one day in the future. As a qualified English teacher, it would be the trip of a life time. to visit the school and meet the children and villagers who now can enjoy better health and minimum of prosperity thanks to having clean water available.

Villagers grouped around the well

Some of the adults seen in this photograph are from the Water- users Committee, which has ownership of the well on behalf of the whole community. Each household (30 in the village) pays the Committee 16p (30cents US) a month for the maintenance of the Well.
Responsabilities are taken very seriously.

The first Well!

I was so happy when I received these photos from Frances, who works for the Charity: she sent me them upon her retun to UK from Uganda.
The well I understand is 56 feet deep, and was dug last July (2007) and the pump was installed in October, 4 months later.
Apparently the diggers go down in a bucket on a rope (Imagine!!! burrowing a hole of 4 1/2 feet in diameter to as far down as 56 feet - hand digging!) for half an hour at a time.
Please, if you wish to contribute to funding a second well, contact the artist. 50% of all sales of greeting cards, gifts, calendars etc., will go towards this

Women from the village

Women from the Village
WE ARE SO FORTUNATE, AS WOMEN IN THE WEST, AS EUROPEANS, AS INDEPENDENT EARNERS, MANY OF US WITH OUR OWN ECONOMIC INDEPENDANCE. ALL THEY NEED IS CLEAN WATER....
WOMEN - COME TOGETHER.

The letter from Frances (Busoga Trust)

The name of the Village is Bugema Lukyamu
THIS LETTER EXPLAINS THE PHOTOGRAPHS AND HOW THE VILLAGE COMMUNTITY WORKS - I HAVE YET TO ASK FRANCES FOR HER PERMISSION TO POST THIS ON THE WEB, BUT AS IT IS WRITTEN TO ME, I DOUBT THERE WILL BE A PROBLEM
