My first Well!

Proof! So happy when I received these photos from Frances after her trip to Uganda.
The well I understand is 56 feet deep, and was dug last July (2007) and the pump was installed in October, 4 months later.
Apparently the diggers go down in a bucket on a rope (Imagine!!! burrowing a hole of 4 1/2 feet in diameter to as far down as 56 feet - hand digging!) for half an hour at a time.

Villagers grouped around the well

Some of the adults seen in this photograph are from the Water- users Committee, which has ownership of the well on behalf of the whole community. Each household (30 in the village) pays the Committee 16p (30cents US) a month for the maintenance of the Well.
Responsabilities are taken very seriously.

Water means survival

The Village Bugema Lukyamu

Bugema Lukyamu is the name of the village located to the south east of Luwero Town in central Uganda.
The well serves (according to Frances David) 30 households, 360 people and very important, 1 primary school
My aim is to visit the Bugema Lukyamu village one day and as a qualified English teacher, I would very much like to contribute with time and take over materials for the school.
